Estimation

Rounding to the Nearest 100.

For questions 34 – 45, round each number to the nearest hundred.

Consider rounding 149 to the nearest hundred by placing the number on the number line. Since 149 is closer to 100, 149 rounds to 100.

Rule: When rounding to the nearest 100, look at the ten to determine if you round to the lower or higher hundred. If the digit in ten’s place is 4 or lower, round to the lower hundred. If it is 5 or higher, round to the higher hundred.

In number 149, look at the ten.  Four is lower than 5, so it will round to the lower hundred.  149 rounds to 100.
