Unit Overview


Message #1 to Mentor: In this unit, the students will learn that

1. a force is a push or a pull and observe and describe what pushes and pulls can do;
2. objects move in different ways and observe and describe different kinds of movements;
3. motion involves moving from one place to another;
4. the amount of change in motion is related to the strength of the push or the pull;
5. friction is a force that makes it harder to move things;
6. motion of objects can be changed by the amount of friction acting upon them;
7. a wheel is a roller that turns on an axle; and
8. rollers and wheels can be used to make things easier to push or pull.


Message #2 to Mentor:  You may want to consider finding the following books to read to your child to make this unit more meaningful. Keep in mind, most libraries carry these books or they can be purchased at a low price, often used, on the Internet. Please make a special effort to get the starred book.

The first video shown below is a presentation of the first part of this unit. Students should view the presentation several times. After ample “practice” in viewing the interactive presentation, and when the mentor feels the student is ready to move on to the questions, proceed to Message #3 to Mentor. 

*Special Note to Mentor: Print out the Motion Worksheet to complete the activity in this section.



Message #3 to Mentor: The student will now complete Activity One, Questions 1 - 2.

The mentor will observe and monitor student progress as the student selects answers, making sure the student is clicking in the appropriate area to answer the corresponding questions and also to save their answers frequently.  IF NECESSARY, THE STUDENT MAY ORALLY CHOOSE THE ANSWER AND THE MENTOR WILL GUIDE THE STUDENT IN CLICKING THE STUDENT-CHOSEN ANSWER.

 

Message #4 to Mentor: The next video shown below is a presentation of the second part of this unit. Students should view this section of the unit several times. These initial viewings of the second part of the unit are considered practice, and the mentor should give ample help.  It is all right if s/he makes mistakes.  After ample “practice” in viewing the presentation, and when the mentor feels the student is ready to move on to the questions, proceed to Message #5 to Mentor.

*Special Note to Mentor: Print out the Friction in OUR Lives Book Worksheet to complete the activity in this section.


Message #5 to Mentor: The student will now complete Activity Two, Questions 3 - 4.

The mentor will observe and monitor student progress as the student selects answers, making sure the student is clicking in the appropriate area to answer the corresponding questions and also to save their answers frequently.  IF NECESSARY, THE STUDENT MAY ORALLY CHOOSE THE ANSWER AND THE MENTOR WILL GUIDE THE STUDENT IN CLICKING THE STUDENT-CHOSEN ANSWER.


Message #6 to MentorThe next video shown below is a presentation of the next part of this unit. Students should view the presentation several times. After ample “practice” in viewing the interactive presentation, and when the mentor feels the student is ready to move on to the questions, proceed to Message #7 to Mentor.

*Special Note to Mentor: Print out the Wheel Organizer Worksheet to complete the activity in this section. Print out the Sweet "Wheels on the Bus" Treat Worksheet to do an optional activity if you wish.


Message #7 to Mentor: The student will now complete Activity Three, Questions 5 - 6.

The mentor will observe and monitor student progress as the student selects answers, making sure the student is clicking in the appropriate area to answer the corresponding questions and also to save their answers frequently.  IF NECESSARY, THE STUDENT MAY ORALLY CHOOSE THE ANSWER AND THE MENTOR WILL GUIDE THE STUDENT IN CLICKING THE STUDENT-CHOSEN ANSWER.

 

Message #8 to Mentor:  Once all the activities presented above are complete, the student is ready to progress to the next unit.
