I. Leonardo da Vinci
Born in 1452 to a peasant girl and a rich father, Leonardo's parents never married. When he was 14 his father apprenticed him to an artist, a man that Leonardo quickly surpassed. "A good student always surpasses his master," he said.
Leonardo da Vinci was a very joyful person who delighted in everything. He was very detail oriented, a characteristic that is often a virtue; but it also meant that he worked slowly. It took him five years to finish the Mona Lisa, and when he delivered it to his patron, he considered it unfinished.
He was the quintessential Renaissance man; he was good at everything he did. Not only did he gain fame as an artist, but also as an inventor, architect, scientist, and musician. He was completely self-taught, not having more than an elementary education. He designed many things in his sketchbooks before they were invented: a bicycle and a parachute, tanks, submarines, helicopters and other flying machines.
His notebooks were many, and were filled with notes and drawings. He covered more than 5,000 pages with drawings in his lifetime. He also wrote all of his notes backwards. He was left handed, and by writing right-to-left he avoided ink smudges easier. He could read and write in both directions!
