RAPHAEL

Unit Overview

In this unit, you will learn about Raphael Sanzio, the youngest and perhaps the most loved of the Renaissance masters. The timeline has been reproduced below.

I. Raphael
Sanzio

Born in 1483 to a court painter, Raphael was always surrounded by art and music. He was orphaned at the age of 11, but he grew up viewing the world as a loving place. He was a star in the pope's court by the age of 26, revered as an artistic giant along with Michelangelo and Leonardo DaVinci. He was engaged to marry a cardinal's niece, but he kept postponing the wedding. He was really in love with a baker's daughter, who was his model for his paintings of the Virgin Mary. He died suddenly at the age of 37.

Raphael is well known for his paintings of Madonna (The Virgin Mary), and his large figure compositions. Most of his large compositions are in the Vatican in Rome. They are a sight to behold, taking up an entire wall. An example of this type of painting is The School of Athens, presented in the picture-book below.

Like Michelangelo, Raphael painted many frescoes in the Vatican. Their personalities, however, were opposites. Michelangelo, as you know, worked alone. Raphael worked with 50 assistants. He was constantly at the parties of the rich and famous. His life was short and happy, and everyone thought he had a kind and gentle soul.
