Powerful People
Big Question:
Why do people sometimes want to change the rules?
Key Vocabulary
Overview
Rules are designed to maintain fairness, ensuring everyone is
treated justly. However, there are times when rules themselves become unfair.
In such instances, individuals of integrity step forward to challenge these
inequities. Take Abigail Adams, for example, who, despite living in a time when
women had limited rights compared to men, spoke out against the enslavement of
people and advocated for women's education alongside men. Another remarkable
individual, Zitkala-Ša, a Native American in the early 1900s, protested against
the U.S. government's lack of respect for Native American cultures. She
courageously wrote stories and formed a group to fight for Native American
rights, significantly improving their lives.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., faced with unjust laws
segregating Black and white Americans, fought tirelessly for equal rights.
During his upbringing, Black Americans were barred from attending the same
public places as white Americans, and Black students had to attend separate
schools. Dr. King's courageous efforts, alongside many others, led to the
overturning of these unfair laws. His work contributed to making it illegal for
the government to treat people unfairly based on their race. Today, people continue
to work towards ensuring fair treatment for all Americans, inspired by the
resilience and courage of individuals like Abigail Adams, Zitkala-Ša, and Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.
