About the Author

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish writer who is best known for his character Sherlock Holmes, perhaps one of the most enduring characters in English fiction. Even if you have not read a Sherlock Holmes story, chances are you've heard of him.

Doyle was the second of ten children. He graduated from medical school in 1885, and his mastery of diagnostic deduction led to the creation of Sherlock Holmes. He wrote nonfiction also, and lamented that people would never read his greater works because they were more interested in Sherlock.
