IDENTIFYING POINTS ON A LINE

Using a Graph

Practice 1.

Select the letter of a point on line AB.

A. (0, 0)

B. (0, 2)

C. (-1, 1)

D. (2, 5)

Solution:

Graph each point from the multiple-choice selections and determine which point is on the line.

Using an Equation

Practice 2.

Which point is on the line y = 4x - 7.

A. (-1, 3)

B. (0, 4)

C. (1, -3)

D. (2, 2)

Solution:

Substitute the x-value of the multiple-choice answers into the equation for  and solve for . If  equals the y-value of the point, then that point is on the line.

A. (-1, 3)

y = 4(-1) - 7

y = -4 -7

y = -11

B. (0, 4)

y = 4(0) - 7

y = 0 - 7

y = -7

C. (1, -3)

y = 4(1) - 7

y = 4 - 7

y = -3

D. (2, 2)

y = 4(2) - 7

y = 8 - 7

y = 1
