Keep Body in Motion

Section A: Three Types of Exercise

The three main types of exercise are aerobic, anaerobic, and building muscles.

Aerobic exercise is an exercise that requires the use of oxygen to fuel the body for exercise demands. This form of exercise is traditionally thought of as cardiovascular exercises, such as running on a treadmill or cycling.

·       Increases endurance

Anaerobic exercise is a form of exercise that requires glucose for short, intense workloads. Strength training and sprinting are forms of anaerobic exercise.

·       Increases power

Building muscle training is the process of building and maintaining muscles in the body by using progressively heavier weights (or resistance). It is also called resistance training, weight lifting, toning, and bodybuilding. Strength training is significant for maintaining muscle mass throughout your lifetime.

·       Increases strength

       Let's Practice: Types of Exercise

     Section B:  Understand the Concepts

Below are the concepts of the three types of exercise.

Aerobic Exercise à Increases Endurance

How do you do it?

Sustained Elevation of Heart Rate

What does it do for you?

Improves Respiration

Improves Blood Delivery

Increases Endurance

Strengthens Heart

Increases Mitochondria

Lowers Blood Pressure

What are the aerobic exercises?

Basketball

Tennis

Soccer

Lacrosse

Hiking

Cycling

Swimming

Running

How would researchers measure your improvement?

They measure your maximum rate of oxygen consumption as a treadmill is sped up.

Anaerobic Exercise à Increases Power

How do you do it?

Short bursts of high energy

What does it do for you?

Increases Muscle Mass

Increases Oxygen Capacity

Increases Bone Density Increases Power

Reduces Fatigue

Boosts Metabolism

What are anaerobic exercises?

Running up the Stairs

Jumping Jacks

Jumping Rope

Rowing Sprinting

Long Jumping

Triple Jumping

How would researchers measure your improvement?

They measure your peak power as you pedal as fast as you can for 30 seconds

Building Muscle à Increases Strength

How do you do it?

Pulling, Pushing, Lifting

What does it do for you?

Enlarges Muscle Cells

Recruits More Muscle Cells

Develops More Mitochondria

Increases Cell Myofibrils

Boosts Metabolism

What builds muscle?

Rock Climbing

Jungle Gym

Yoga

Crunches

Sit-Ups

Planks

How would researchers measure your improvement?

They measure the combined back and leg strength while you pull up on a spring.

    Unit Activity Log

Throughout this course, you will be given more examples of warm-ups, exercise activities, and cooldowns.  If you have any questions or concerns at any time, please message your teacher.  Below is a chart provided by the Ohio Afterschool Network that you can utilize to complete your "Unit Activity Logs."
